Why do some people get angry when their activity is not called a sport?

In some conversations people tell me their activity is a sport (ballet, dancing, cheerleading, bodybuilding) and they ask me what I think. So I ask them "what do you call a sport?" or "what is your definition of sport?" and usually with their own definitions their activity is not a sport or almost anything qualifies as a sport. When I point this out they get angry and say things like "it is really hard to do this", "it is an athletic activity that requires...", "I train every day", "I participate in the association..." and things like that. Has this happened to you?

Note: I actually do not care much about the label of "sport" to consider something hard or important. I have done activities that are considered sports (soccer, football, etc) and activities that may not be considered sports. Why do some people get angry when their activity is not called a sport?
They think you're insulting their hardwork and all the efforts they put into said activate.

I hate when people call things sports that aren't.

Ballet, however hard it maybe, is not a sport. You don't compete I don't think, and it's an art anyway.

It's like when Soccer or Football(american) players call what they do art, people are quick to say 'You're just running down a field with a ball."

:P

And Bodybuilding is just weird...well the extreme side of it.
It is a sport, its your perception of sport that's off, not theirs.

I don't understand how NASCAR is a sport.

It's a bunch of hillbillies driving around for 3 hours, doing nothing too physical.

That doesn't define a sport.

Basketball, Rugby, Soccer and Football are real sports.

They require a healthy body and skill.

Not just the ability to drive a car and waste rubber and gasoline and produce pollution.
Anything athletic is a sport. So Body building and Cheerleading fit into that category. Body building for obviously the weightlifting to get that way. Cheerleading for the gymnastic abilities. Why do some people get angry when their activity is not called a sport?
a sport involve a ball and competion, if they compete they are playing a sport if not they are working out or danicing or what ever
idk... but ballet cheerleading and bodybuilding are sports.
