Best sporting nation in the world?

I have just made a table of all nations considering the latest world rankings of the main team sports: football, basket, rugby, cricket, volleyball, hockey (incl. ice), baseball, handball and water-polo. I didn't put tennis (davis cup) as it is still individual sport.

I gave higher score for more popular sports worldwide (i considered how many countries take part in main events and how many members has each association. Well here it is (top 15). Does it respect the true current value?

1. USA

2. Spain

3. Argentina

4. Italy

5. Australia

6. Germany

7. Russia

8. Brazil

9. Serbia

10. France

11. England

12. New Zeland

13. Holland

14. South Africa

15. Croatia.Best sporting nation in the world?
No, I don't think so at all. How is the US at the top when cricket is played by almost 1.5 billion, Football (soccer) by even more and baseball..yeah righty-ho. Handball??? Oh and Davis Cup is a team sport but they play individual rubbers as well as doubles. How Italy are above Australia...you need to justify these rankings as I doubt you used very scientific methodology.

edit: Still don't get it, Spain at 2 because they play Football, Basketball, a bit of Volleyball etc...and your ranking is not based on all sports and therefore still open to abuse by not including certain sports. It's a nice idea but deeply flawed.Best sporting nation in the world?
Ditch the Daily Mail lol. ;) I never read that rubbish.I love sports, Sumo, even the old Kabbadi that used to be on C4. I'm currently living and working in China so I see BB, TT, Diving, Volleyball, Wushu on all the time, no Rugby, Sailing, Athletics, Tennis, Swimming, Cycling etc.

Why is the uk 11th?

We are the biggest sporting nation in the world lol

Considering the usa has the highest obesity rate in the world its very messed up you put them top.
Now add in a population size factor and see who you get...

EDIT: Yeah how is Italy anywhere near that high. Shouldn't be in top 10.
