so a couple weeks ago my car stalled twice within 5 minutes and before it stalled i could feel the engine shaking. I took it to a merchants tire and auto place and they ran one of those code tests and the code for below the threshold and they woman told me to i quote " go to a muffler shop and have them clean it" YES SHE SAID CLEAN IT! I asked a question on here about cleaning it and tons of people said it cant be cleaned, it needs to be replaced (dumb woman!) so anyways i have not been able to take it to get replaced and have been driving it for about a month now and no problems such as stalling except for a little bit of a power problem meaning it is hard to get up hills and accelerate as usual. Ok so my question is, Based on what you just read, how much do you think it'd cost to get a new catalytic converter for my Saturn? I will be most likely taking it to Monroe muffler (chain store) . Don't say call them just so you can get your measly 5 pts for answering because if you dont know then do not write anything and waste our time. Give me an estimate please!
PS This car is a piece of **** never get a saturn!(no i did not have a say in this piece of crap even though i was paying my mom back)|||Those vary a lot in price for example so replacement cat converters for that run 140-300 all depending on what brand , materials their made of and where you purchase them from.I bet I could find one for around 80-100 bucks but it all depends again on who you know and if you shop around. The labour shouldn't be more then 40-80 bucks and and some shops offer free installation. For example here in Canada most places I know charge about 150 bucks parts/labour and then taxes but these will only be aftermarket universal cat converters. Now if you dealt with a shop/parts store that dealt especially with Saturn parts you may find the part and labour even cheaper.Again regardless a good 150-200 bucks on average.
Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way sometimes the old cat converter/core is valuable even as scrap due to the type of metals inside of them. The prices I quoted for the cat converters is from autozone.com but again shop around be you may find the cat for a good price online/offline and then just get a shop to install it.|||No, cats cant be cleaned. And a high flow cat for an OBD 2 system like your car has shouldnt be more then 300 $ at your local muffler shop. Dont go to Midas, look in your local phone book for a muffler shop that installs cats.
