Do you agree with the concept of US professional sports champions being called World Champions?

Is it the biggest oxymoron to have United States professional sports leagues in Hockey, Basketball, Baseball, and Football call themselves World Champions?

Think about the following:

NFL - called National Football League. All in U.S.

The winner of the Super Bowl of the NFL is deemed the World Champions?

MLB - Major League baseball has one team outside the continental United States (Toronto Blue Jays)? However, there are professional baseball leagues in Japan/Asia and South America.

MLB winners are the World Series Champions of United States Baseball.

NBA - called National Basketball Association. Has teams in Canada as well. However, professional basketball is all over europe and asia.

NBA Finals winners called World Champions.

NHL - called National Hockey League. Teams in Canada and US. Crowned World Champions.

Three of the sports (hockey, bball, and baseball are/were represented as Olympic sports, yet every year, the US crowns a world champion.

Thoughts?|||It's very delusional to claim such titles. NFL World Champions is an oxymoron as Gridiron is a domestic competition played in one country.

Baseball, I read it is called the World Series due to an old newspaper sponsorship. The name has remained, but the point of being delusional is evident. What's to say that a Japanese club team can't beat an American team.

Basketball. Isn't there already a World Champion? I think it's Spain or France? The NBA may be the premier domestic Basketball competition, but it's stupid to call themselves World Champions. Again, very delusional.

Ice Hockey. I know nothing about Ice Hockey. I've seen a bit on the Winter Olympics and that's all.

Overall it's just self gratification of competitions who know they have no significance in a global market. They don't even come close to football teams like Liverpool, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Manchester United.|||It's okay for the NFL to do it b/c there are no real contenders outside the US. Basketball is borderline. The teams in Europe are definitely improving, but I don't believe they are up to beating the NBA finalists. They have upset the US national teams in the Olympics though, so it won't be too long before they could contend. I would agree that the NHL and MLB are lying when they call the National Champion a World Champion. Maybe they could host a foreign tournament and the winner allowed to play as a team in the playoffs.|||It's just an expression really, but I do believe that In Baseball and Football, The NFL or MLB team is truly the best in the world if they win it all. Not true though with Hockey and basketball, and especially Soccer|||wel thought out and very very true . the only world championships that are truly open are the mann and minto cups in box lacrosse . this is excluding under 19 events etc . i agree with you 100 percent . very accurate , but it is big business . the city with the most wotld championships is new westminister canada . the closest city thet says it has wotld championships is new york b ball nffl nhl base ball . combined world championships . far distance from new westminister which has won more in just one sport lacrosse . the tournamebts are open . which is the real city of champions . the city of 200,000 or the city of gods knows how many|||Yeah, it is a bit untruthful, but who really cares. The US isn't the only country to do this, we all know that they are exageratnig. The only true league that puts countries head to head is the olympics, there the true world champions are crowned.
