Is the mechanic trying to get me ?

I'm buying a 2001 ford focus, I went into Monroe muffler brake and asked them how much everything I needed for the car would cost me.

The car needs:

New front brakes+installation

Top off of the fluids or something

Tire rotation

An oil change

Now the guy told me that all together it would run me about 340$+ tax. It's not really a bad price... Or is it? Should this cost me more or less? Are there cheaper places or am I getting a good deal ?|||yes

go to a ford dealer|||i get oil change and tire rotation and fluid top off for $29.99 at a private owned garage. as far as breaks go pads cost $40 on up to $75 depending on what you want. if you need rotors they are $30 a piece. so i would say that's a high price.|||Greg,

Yes, that is definitely a bit high. Your biggest cost would be the brake job. Shouldn't be any more than $200 tops. A bit more if rotors need to be replaced. Otherwise, a oil change, tire rotation, and topping off fluids would be less than $100. Get another estimate, Monroe is trying to snow you.|||In my eyes he is getting you real good!!

Try it once for yourself if you would like to change your own brake pads!!! Its simple!

1: loosen lug nuts

2: jack car up and put jack supports in place.

3: remove tire.

4: use pry bar to compress caliper, prying between caliper and rotor.

5: remove bolt from top and bottom of caliper.

6:Remove old pads by hand.

7:Install new pads.

8:slid caliper over rotor and reinsert bolts.

9:put wheel back on and tighten lug nuts.

10: remove jack stands and lower car, tighten lug nuts to spec tourq.

you get the point... google how to replace your pads and you will get good diagrams... very simple~

If you dont want to try to do it yourself go to a not so franchised shop... rotation should be thrown in for free since they will already have the front 2 wheels off...|||Monroe muffler, Mineke and all those tire and battery places are a ripoff. They charge 25% markup on already marked up parts and so on.

If you want to save some money find a nice mom and pap mechanic shop and take it from there. Or go to a Ford dealer and get an estimate sometimes they have big sales on tires and oil change.|||Lets break it down into separate jobs and see whats up.

Oil change = Average price is 21.95

Tire rotation = Average price is 79.95

To top off the fluids = Its hard to put a price on this because of there being so many different fluids to check.

Front brakes = Parts would run about $39.95 (considering it does not need anything other than pads) along with that include turning the rotors ($16/ea.) and then throw in 1.5 hours of time (average $85/hr)

Add all that up and you come up with $301.35 plus taxes. It sounds like a decent deal to me.|||$ 70.00 for brake pads $100.00 for 2 front brake rotors remove rear tires to check rear brakes. oil change 35.00.top off fl. comes with oil changing........$ 205.00.sounds like a good price|||Should be closer to $250, depending on what all the brakes need|||I just put new disc brake pads on my wife's car for $55. Took less than 1 hr. Didn't need rotors, but that would have been about $200 extra. That $340 quoted to you may include turning the rotors if there is enough metal is left. It certainly does not include replacing the rotors or calipers if needed. All shops charge about 2x - 3x the retail price for parts that you can buy at NAPA at full retail. Oil change = $20. Tire rotation is a nothing job when brakes are done - they have to remove the front tires anyway. Top off fluids is a max of $20 (coolant, power steering, brake fluid, windshield washer, oil (part of oil change). But these shops are in cahoots with each other so that you really can't get a good deal.|||don't just take one quote, try other garage's, I bet they will all say something different, ask what their hourly rate is|||$99.00 for the front brake job

top off fluids should be free

$35.00 for a tire rotation.

$29.00 for an oil change

seems a bit high|||"Top the fluids off". Can't you do that yourself?

Oil Change -- you can find $20 deals for that.

Tire rotation: grab a couple of jacks and a lug wrench.

So the question is, are new brakes worth $340 for $40 worth of parts?
