Should I feel auto shop is unfair?

I lost a drive belt and drove about 3 miles without it. I would only drive a mile since the temperature gauge got so high. I waited about 20 minutes to start the car again. After I stopped the third time it wouldn't start. I got the car towed and I was told it needs a belt and tensioner and a battery. I got this repaired at one shop and since the battery is a year old and should be under warranty I decided to go back to where I got the battery.

When I got back to the other shop I showed him my receipt and that I felt the battery should be replaced under warranty. He told me as long as my alternator is not bad. When he got the car in there he told me he put a battery in but the car still will not start. He said I need an alternator, starter and possibly a water pump. It seems strange to me that he mentioned that he felt something could be wrong with my alternator before he even looked at the car.It seems like the shop wants to make money on something since they have to replace the battery for free.

I first had the car at PepBoys and they just said a battery and when I got to Monroe Muffler/Brake they want so much more replaced. I don't feel my alternator or starter should be bad with driving that little bit without a belt. Does it sound like all I need is a battery like PepBoys said or could I need more work done like Monroe Muffler/Brake wants?

The car is a 1995 Chevy Lumina with 164,000 miles on it.|||misdiagnosis or your getting raped(potentially)|||Definitely time for another opinion.

"Needs an alternator, starter and water pump" for a no start condition sounds like he's throwing darts at a parts book.|||A bad alternator can drain your battery. It happened to me.|||from personal experience id say monroe is pulling your chain. they did that to me as well and i got stuck paying 1700$ in stuff they said needed replacing. the stuff they did replace i had to redo again a year after them cuz they screwed it up, and some of the things they never did but i got charged for. i will never EVER return to any monroe. i have read on the internet that a large majority of monroes will do this to their customers.

id say start with the battery.

you can take your starter and alternator to advance or auto zone or maybe even pepboys and have them test it. they usually do it for free.|||you should never trust mechanics they are in to make money and i can tell you something else when they go to buy parts for your car they get big discounts for the parts because they have accounts from parts store even if you call the parts store the parts store will only give you retail price its best to do the work yourself but ask around get diff mechanic shops to look at it that will help you hopefuly
